Fed: Aussie appointed deputy to UN force comander

An Australian army officer has been appointed as the new deputy force commander of
the United Nations peacekeeping mission in East Timor.

Major-General ROGER POWELL will replace another Australian, Major-General MIKE SMITH
as deputy to the force commander -- Thai Lieutenant-General BOONSRANG NIUMPRADIT -- from
March 9.

Defence Minister PETER REITH says it's a privilege for Australia to be asked to fill
